If you need high-quality panel wood material for construction or Do-It-Yourself projects, you will probably be happy using Russian birch plywood. It features exceptional strength, good moisture resistance, and attractive appearance.

You must have seen inexpensive birch plywood at a large hardware store, and you would have worked with it. You know that many types of such plywood have birch plies only on the outside, and these plies are very thin. Inside, there are 3, 5, or 7 plies of soft pine or poplar — the more, the better. These plies inside may even have voids in them. Not bad if your project does not require high strength or carving. However, if it does, such a structure is a problem.

Russian manufacturers of birch plywood use birch veneer in all plies and there are many of these plies! 5/8-inch plywood has at least 11 birch plies. And they are all solid; there are no voids inside the plywood. This guarantees excellent durability and the possibility of complex processing, which becomes easy if you have good material.

Advantages of 5/8-inch Russian birch plywood:

  • only birch veneer used;
  • solid structure without voids in the inside plies;
  • many plies laid crosswise for greatest strength;
  • impressive moisture resistance, which depends on the choice of the grade;
  • ease of sawing, carving, and drilling;
  • excellent retention of nails, staples, and screws; and
  • smooth aesthetic surface.

Plywood moisture resistance

Russian birch plywood may be of three types:

  • The plywood glued with urea-formaldehyde glue. It does not contain phenol. It may be used indoors, for making toys and souvenirs.
  • The plywood glued with phenol-formaldehyde resins. This plywood is more moisture resistant. It should be used for the structures to be located in wet rooms or outdoors.
  • Laminated birch plywood is additionally protected with waterproof laminate. Laminated plywood with a smooth face is used for making formwork, but 4/8-inch plywood is used for making formwork for small foundations. Plywood with a meshed surface is used for making the floor in vehicles and open areas.

Use

Depending on the grade and type, 5/8-inch birch plywood may be used for various purposes, such as

  • making furniture;
  • making doors;
  • sheathing the walls inside the house — interiors with natural wood finish are back in the trend;
  • making toys and outdoor structures for children;
  • roofing;
  • leveling the floor for carpeting;
  • technical modeling; and
  • other Do-It-Yourself projects.

Grades

If you are looking for plywood for a designer project, you will need grade A or B plywood. It is sanded plywood. Grade A plywood does not have any defects, and grade B plywood may have repaired defects 1 inch in diameter on the surface. For construction, it is better to buy a grade C or D plywood. It is unsanded plywood with defects on the surface, and its price is lower. Besides, you can buy mix-grade plywood with one face sanded and without defects, and the other face unsanded, with knots and small cracks. Mix-grade plywood is a good solution for wall sheathing.
